CTRMA Plans to Build Technologically Innovative Mobility Solutions like the MoPac Project

The American-Statesman in its September 3 Viewpoints editorial said that Austin’s traffic congestion will increase in future and that the local community needs a technological solution to solve it. CTRMA’s Mike Heiligenstein shared the views expressed by the Statesman and added that CTRMA is well underway to address traffic congestion in the area.

According to Heiligenstein, CTRMA is ideally suited to build mobility solutions. The Authority constructed 183A Toll Road located in Leander and Cedar Park that transformed the local communities. It also built the 290 toll road connecting Manor and Austin that tripled capacity and improved non-toll roads.

Technological Innovation and Smart Roads

CTRMA is presently building MoPac Express Lanes that will infuse sophisticated technology at its tolling stations that will manage traffic flow. The MoPac project will not eliminate congestion entirely; however, it will allow easier flow of traffic. Variable tolling rates charged will synchronize demand and supply ensuring a predictable traffic flow even during rush hour.

Heiligenstein asserts that CTRMA remains dedicated to technological solutions that will make its future road projects smart. Fiber lines are scheduled to be included in its 183 South project between the airport and US 290 in anticipation of a future date when vehicles will communicate with road infrastructure.

CTRMA’s partnership with Metropia led to the creation of an innovative mobile traffic application that could be integrated with the local traffic monitoring system and provide commuters with real-time alternative routes. The authority is also working with carpooling app Carma to encourage ridesharing among commuters. The Statesman report further encourages people to pedal and walk. CTRMA projects have shared use paths that connect to existing trails. Additionally, CTRMA will build a pedestrian/bike bridge over MoPac, south of Parmer Lane. To fight congestion, CTRMA partnered with Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization to launch the Highway Emergency Response Operator program called HERO.

Heiligenstein said that although CTRMA does not have every solution to present traffic problems, it has partnered with entities that have a stake in solving traffic problems.

CTRMA Executive Director Mike Heiligenstein has headed the transport authority since 2003. He has helped grow the agency to a nationally recognized toll road operations leader.

According to Biz Journals, Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority is an entity that operates as a non-profit and is accountable to Williamson and Travis counties’ residents.
