Steve Hutensky

Steve Hutensky is an entertainment lawyer and managing partner of The Hutensky Group, an entertainment law firm in Beverly Hills. Steve Hutensky is well-known for his work with musicians such as Robin Thicke and Pitbull, he has been featured on NBC’s Today show, CNN and the Huffington Post. Here, he talks to Stephen Lunt about what makes a great music lawyer.

Steve Hutensky has been in the music business for almost 25 years. He started out working for a law firm where he earned $50,000 a year. Since then, he has been to court over 600 times and negotiated some of the largest deals in the industry, including $1 billion deals with Universal Music and Sony.

He’s now managing partner at The Hutensky Group – an entertainment law firm that handles cases all over the United States. His clients have included Pitbull, the Walking Dead, and Slipknot.

I asked Steve how he got started in the music industry by saying: “It was a case of being in the right place at the right time.” When first introduced to Ed Sheeran, he didn’t want to represent him. He has Made Up Stories, and a band called the Beggars who also taught Bruce Springsteen to play guitar.

Currently Steve Hutensky is working on an album for singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran, as well as a new album for Pitbull. When asked what his advice would be to someone looking to start off in the music business, he replied: “The first thing is you obviously need to find some talent like Robin Thicke did. But you can get a good start by working on music with people who have been in the business for a long time because they know what to expect.”

It’s important how you get your music into stores, on radio stations or satellite radio channels and how often you do it. See this page to learn more.
