His approach begins with direct acknowledgment. “When there is some type of break there, the first thing you can do with anybody is admit it,” he says. Covering up a mistake, he argues, guarantees failure. “If you don’t admit that mistake was made or you did something that violated someone’s trust, if you try to cover that up, it’s never going to get repaired.”

This philosophy asks something of advisors that professional settings don’t always encourage: vulnerability. Admitting fault can feel at odds with projecting competence, but Nelson frames it as the only viable path forward.

Time and Honesty as Tools

Rebuilding trust isn’t immediate, and Justin Nelson makes no claim that it should be. “Trust can totally be rebuilt, it takes time and honesty,” he says.
