Barry Lall; The Philanthropist
Barry Lall is a writer and the director of Chicago non-profit organization, Kids In Need Of Defense. He has written for CBS Chicago, BBC Radio 6, The Root, and many others.
Barry Lall has also been featured in the book “Hard News” by Dionne Bromfield as well as appearances on BBC World Service’s “The Big Questions,” BBC Radio 4’s “In Our Time,” BBC Radio 3’s “Late Junction,” NPR Online’s Weekend Edition with Scott Simon, Marketplace Morning Report with Jon Steinberg and Marketplace Weekend Host Kai Ryssdal.
His short story “A Kid With Wings” was selected for the 2015 Best American Non-Required Reading List from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
His essays and articles have been published in the “Journal of Black Gender Studies”, “The Chronicle Review”, “OPEN Magazine,” the “Chicago Tribune,” the “Chicago Sun-Times”, “The Irish Times,” and the 2013 anthology, “The Urban: A Chicago Anthology.”
Barry Lall’s first book, entitled “I Don’t Care What They Say About Me,” was published by Arcadia Publishing on May 31, 2009. The book presents the stories of 14 men and one woman whose lives have been impacted by incarceration. It talks about what happens to a person after he is arrested for an offense that led to him being incarcerated. While in prison, Barry Lall decided to write a book about his life, which eventually led to him becoming the editor-in-chief of “Prison Life Telegram.” He interviewed many well-known prisoners including R. Kelly, who faced sexual abuse charges.
Barry was awarded a degree from Columbia College Illinois and later pursued a master’s degree from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. While at Northwestern he was an intern at ABC 7 Chicago, Chicago Tribune and WBEZ 91.5 FM.
Barry is a board member and the director of Kids in Need of Defense. He was also the founder of Reentry Radio and worked as the program manager for the Chicago Anti-Recidivism Coalition.
