Football Mastermind – Gino Pozzo

When you come from the Pozzo family you are going to be born into a passionate football family. Family patriarch Giampaolo Pozzo and his wife Giuliana Pozzo purchased the Italian football club in his hometown of Udine, Italy. That team was called the Udinese Calcio Football Club.

Their son, Gino went to school in the United States and move to the home country of his wife, Barcelona. He spent the next 20 years there and then moved to London, England to run his newly purchased Vicarage Road football team. Building on the reputation of the Pozzo family, Gino Pozzo was quite excellent at running that club. He has an outstanding reputation as a one of the most forward-thinking football executives in the global world of football.

When the family purchased the Watford Football Club, they became the only family in the world to own three football clubs in three different countries! They are known for specializing in turning around football clubs which are in deep debt. Gino Pozzo as the current leader of the football operations for the family likes to be very hands on while managing a club and bringing into the green. Because of this the family now owns two clubs, the Udinese and Watford. Gino believes that this gives him the opportunity to more closely supervise his teams with only two under his management.

Pozzo’s approach to secure the future success of his teams is to use a scouting approach to football. As necessary he trades his players between his clubs to benefit each. Player recruitment is also a centerpiece of Gino Pozzo’s philosophy. He also believes that staying open to coaching changes are part of his success with both clubs. By engaging in this approach to football, Pozzo believes that he keeps both clubs from being too dependent on any one player or coach.
