From Chemical Engineer to Fitness Guru, Edgard Corona Leads Latin American Businesses
Edgard Corona
didn’t start college intending to enter the sports and fitness industry. He majored
in chemical engineering, intending to enter the field of science. Always
athletic, he especially enjoys skiing, but during the 1990s, he incurred a
serious injury while skiing. Recovering from his injury required significant
physical therapy, during which t ime ideas started coming to him about what
would make an ideal fitness center.
At the time, most
people didn’t work out in fitness centers, instead working out at home. His
physical therapy sessions made him realize how useful a trainer can be for
form, new exercises, and encouragement. In 1996, his first gym, Academia Bio
Ritmo, opened, offering athletes a place to train and trade ideas and advice.
By sharing techniques that helped each athlete get the desired results more
quickly, the Academia Bio Ritmo athletes performed better.

As time passed,
Corona realized that the Academia Bio Ritmo design did not serve everyone. It
reached serious athletes, but Edgard Corona wanted to innovate a fitness center
that would serve the whole population, including casual exercisers and all
income levels. Essentially, he set a goal to bring fitness to the masses.
As the founding
partner and CEO of SmartFit , Edgard Corona did this in Latin America, beginning
in 2008. SmartFit specializes in creating workouts for their clients that let
them create a healthier body without spending countless hours at the gym. His
SmartFit business model also streamlines the fitness center’s chain management
approach, which has enabled the business to grow to the fourth-largest fitness
center group in the world.
