Shelton Haynes at the Forefront to Make RIOC Better

A public benefit corporation created to enhance the residential community of Roosevelt Island, The Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) has grown in stature and reputation since it was created in 1984. Now, with Shelton Haynes at the helm of RIOC, the future is looking brighter than ever before.

Haynes is a New York City native, and has been with RIOC for almost a decade now. He is a respected community leader and dedicated to bettering not only his own business, but the community around it as well. He has led resilient efforts to develop new Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation initiatives for employment and contract opportunities for Roosevelt Island residents.

Haynes is the driving force behind making RIOC better by building trust with the community, being transparent with the press and delivering on promises within time. Haynes’ vision of RIOC as an employer of choice is now a reality, with the company gaining national recognition for its efforts to hire Roosevelt Island residents and women.

Recently, Shelton Haynes received recognition for his project that has immensely improved the quality of life in the community.

Renovation of the Roosevelt Island Youth Center

The Roosevelt Island Youth Center is a large part of the Roosevelt Island community, and has been for decades. RIOC’s renovation of the facility was an immense undertaking that took about a year and $2.1 million to complete.

The project included a complete overhaul of interior decor to create a conducive environment for children and youth, as well as new technology that allows the center to offer a wide range of activities. Also added was a music den, computer lab, learning kitchen, art studio and a community space.

The new renovated facility provides an opportunity for the island’s youth to engage in creative expression, build self-esteem and foster independence, setting them up for success in the future.

Haynes is at the forefront of making a vibrant, innovative and inviting community that will put Roosevelt Island in the spotlight and allow potential residents to see the positive effect RIOC is having.
