Shelton Haynes’ Impact on Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation

Established in 1984 by the State of New York, the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) was mandated to empower Roosevelt Island’s residential community by implementing innovative and sustainable solutions. By managing multiple facets of the island, including roads, parks, buildings, and other facilities, RIOC ensures the overall well-being of residents, employees, business owners, and visitors. Their efforts not only enhance the quality of life for individuals on the island but also contribute to maintaining a safe and secure environment for everyone.

In June 2020, Shelton Haynes assumed office as an interim President and CEO, whereby he committed to his team to prioritize transparency as a means to foster trust within the community and the organization. Roosevelt Island and its reputation as a secret gem transformed when he took charge. Under his leadership, projects initiated by previous RIOC management were completed, bringing new life and vitality to the area.

RIOC introduced two substantial additions to Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation under Shelton Haynes’ supervision. The FDR Hope Memorial was dedicated to President Franklin D. Roosevelt in July 2021. A monument honoring writer Nellie Bly was also unveiled in December 2021. As ambassadors for the Roosevelt Island brand, RIOC successfully attracted investors by demonstrating the island’s extraordinary potential. This creative public relations strategy resulted in the construction ventures, contributing to the community’s growth and vibrancy.

Another milestone Shelton and his team achieved was the restoration of the Roosevelt Island Lighthouse. He acknowledged the prestigious award bestowed upon the team by the Friends of the Upper East Side Historic Districts. Also, it was made to emphasize the unique character of Roosevelt Island, enriched by its rich historical heritage, with the Lighthouse serving as a significant landmark. He noted RIOC’s responsibility to safeguard and preserve these historical treasures for present and future generations of residents.

Shelton Haynes is passionate about public service and activities that benefit the Roosevelt Island community. Although the island is already renowned as one of the safest communities in New York City, he intends to prioritize community policing. The Roosevelt Island Youth Center, scheduled to acquire a School Age Child Care (SACC) license, is one of his proudest accomplishments. RIOC can extend its services with this license and receive extra program funds.
