Objectives of Alliance Defending Freedom
The United States Constitution was ratified by the required number of states in 1789. In 1791, the Bill of Rights adopted ten amendments called the Bill of Rights that protected individual rights from federal government interference.
Among them, the First Amendment provides, in part, that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”.
History
The American colonies had just won independence from Great Britain which had, under King Henry VIII, established the Church of England. The King of England is the head of state as well as the head of the state church. The American colonists adopted the concept of separation of church and state.
Many colonists came to America to escape religious persecution for their beliefs. Hence, the First Amendment prohibits the government establishment of a state religion as well as Congressional interference with the free exercise of any religion.
Alliance Defending Freedom
In 1994, a group of Christian leaders established the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF).
Alliance Defending Freedom’s missions include the protection of the freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment. Religious freedom is guaranteed for all religions including Christianity, Jews, Muslims, Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, as well as the freedom of people who choose to observe no religion or faith.
ADF International was organized to defend all religious minorities against persecution. It is accredited by the Organization of American States (OAS) and the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). In pursuit of that mission, ADF International has been instrumental in achieving 30 victories before the European Court of Human Rights.
ADF Funding
The Alliance Defending Freedom is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization. Its budget is financed entirely by donations. Since 1999, ADF’s operating costs have increased more than tenfold. Your donations will be much appreciated and can be made online.
