Ahead of the ADA’s 31st anniversary, Roosevelt Island will unveil a new memorial honoring FDR. The Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) and the Roosevelt Island Disabled Association (RIDA) have announced plans to commemorate the 31st commemoration of the Americans with Disabilities Act with the reveal of the FDR Hope Monument, an engaging work of art honoring former US President and disability advocacy group, Franklin Roosevelt. The monument will be unveiled during the first weekend in June and will feature Roosevelt’s Roosevelt Island Emergency Response Assistance Program (ERAP), also known as the “Ice Bucket Challenge,” where during ALS Awareness Month, participants dump a bucket of ice-cold water on their heads to help raise money for the fight against Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The first 175 people to complete the ice bucket challenge raising $175 or more will contribute to that year’s FDR Hope Monument.
Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation opened Roosevelt Island’s first park with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, June 10. The community-outreach organization was incorrectly opened in the summer of 2012, when, according to the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC), it should have been opened “in spring.” To correct that error, RIOC and its managing partner, the Roosevelt Island Association (RIA), held a celebration that included launching several key new initiatives.
